India International Regatta
From: Sunday, November 01, 2009
To: Sunday, November 08, 2009
Venue: Bay of Bengal off Chennai

Adventure lovers and sailing enthusiasts in the country will be thrilled to hear that the Yachting Association of India will be organizing the India International Regatta at Chennai from 1 – 8 November, 2009. For the first time the city of Chennai, which has many international events like the Chennai Open, Chennai Marathon etc, will see the addition of one more International event being attached to its list of annual sporting events. International sailors will participate in a week long regatta which promises to be challenging not only because of the speed of the boats and the young age of sailors, but also because of the demanding conditions of water and monsoon prevalent at the time.

The Tamil Nadu Sailing Association will be hosting the Regatta out of the Port of Chennai and races will be organized in the Bay of Bengal. With the emphasis on youth, this regatta has been organized in two youth racing classes: the single handed Optimist dinghy for the sub junior sailors and the exciting new 29er for adolescent sailors who have grown out of the Optimist and have taken to this two-handed sailing dinghy.

Sail Training Clinic at Chennai
From: Wednesday, October 21, 2009
To: Friday, October 30, 2009
Venue: Chennai Sailing Academy

The Yachting Association of India will hold a training clinic for the junior sailors participating in the India International Regatta to assist sailors in honing up their skills during 21 to 30 October 09.
The clinic will be covered by renowned coaches Tony Tan of Singapore and Clynton Wade Lehman from Australia.

Tony Tan - an accomplished sailor took to sailing in 1970. He first represented the Singapore yachting team as a reserve at the '73 Games and thereafter went on to sail for Singapore till 1990. He is currently Thailand's consultant and National Coach looking after the Single Handed class of boats. At the recently concluded IODA Optimist World championship 2009 in Brazil, his trainee from Thailand was crowned the World Champion in Girls category. This win itself is one for the history books of local sport and also reinforces the credentials of not only the athlete, but also of the coach who mentored his apprentice ever so well.

Tony Tan's was honoured by the Government of Singapore as Coach of the Year 1993, which is an acknowledgement of that quality as seen through the triumphant feats of two of his charges, namely sailors Ben Tan and Tracey Tan. Both sailors had been under the umbrella of Tan since 1990 and at the 1993 SEA Games (Singapore), Ben and Tracey both sailed to gold medals in the laser (men and girl) categories. The Coach of the Year tribute awarded to Tan also came on the back of his illustrious charge, Tracey Tan, having attained the Sports girl of the Year award that same year. Incidentally, Tracey also happens to be the daughter of Tony Tan - competitive sailing runs in the family.

Clynton Wade Lehman - currently works for Bethwaite Design and started his sailing career at the age of 10 in Durban, South Africa. He then went onto an international sailing career culminating in participating in the Soling Class at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA, where he represented South Africa. Clynton has been the South African Youth Champion and also has to his credit the title of the Nations Cup World Match Racing Championships.

Since relocating to Sydney in 2000, most of his sailing has been on 49ers and 18 Foot skiffs. Clynton has won numerous state and National championships in South Africa and Australia and stood 4th in the Sydney Hobart Race during 2008, third in the 49er Class at the Sydney International Regatta.

The India International Regatta is partly funded by Government of India and partly by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The event is sponsored by Volvo, Tata Teleservices, HH Services and Extreme Sailing Products, Singapore. Indian Institute of Technology Madras, is the accommodation partner, Taj Hotels & Resorts, the Hospitality partner , Chennai Live FM the Radio partners, Kalakshetra Foundation, the social events partner and India Boating will be the magazine partners of the event.
